Is porn addiction real?

Is porn addiction real?

Is excessive use classed as porn addiction and does it matter?

Although a controversial topic, pornography addiction is an undeniably destructive habit for those living within its grasp.

Whilst watching porn, the brain produces a flood of endorphins and powerful neuro chemicals such as dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin. These chemicals within our brain hold the power of creating an intense euphoria or high which is both rewarding and highly addictive.

The act of watching porn can initially be thought of as fun and pleasurable and as an easy and accessible means of relaxation and enjoyment.

However, porn can cause a dopamine spike which lasts much longer than standard sex, and the repetition of using this sexual outlet as a means of pleasure, relaxation or coping has the potential to create a strong chemical dependence to the behaviour.

The classification of addiction is when you no longer have control over doing, taking or using something to the point that it is causing harm to you or those around you.

Signs of struggling with porn addiction

These can include intense cravings, loss of control over the behavior and a continued involvement with it despite negative consequences.

Addiction to any substance or behaviour can cause intense feelings such as guilt and shame; leading to feeling averse to reaching out and receiving help.

Addiction in any shape or form also has the potential to be crippling in all areas of life and can create feelings of helplessness and despair.

Pornography addiction is a treatable condition and it’s important to know that overcoming addiction is possible with the right treatment and support.

Struggling with any addiction can be an isolating experience, however your recovery journey, when you are ready, doesn’t have to be alone.
